What is the CLEP Exam and How can it Benefit my Child

What is the CLEP Exam and How can it Benefit my Child What is the CLEP Exam and How can it Benefit my Child? What is the CLEP Exam and How can it Benefit my Child? The CLEP exam, also known as the College Level Examination Program, is a series of tests that can help students earn college credit for general education courses if they receive a passing score. This can be a great advantage to students who know a significant amount of information about certain subjects, those who would like to save money on college, and those who are returning to school after a period of absence. The primary benefit is that if the student passes the test they are generally excused from the same course material in college. However, students are encouraged to find out from the university directly if they will accept the credits. 1. Amount of Credits According to the College Board, students who pass the CLEP exams should expect to earn anywhere from 3 to 12 college credits. This is a huge benefit to students who cannot afford to spend four years in college or those who feel they will become bored with material they have already mastered (READ: More Standardized Testing: What is the SBAC?). 2. Subject matter Students can take exams in five subject areas. The first category is history and social science, where students can take History of the United States and Human Growth and Development. (This is just a small list of the examinations offered.) Students can also take exams in the categories of composition and literature, science and mathematics, business, and world languages such as French, German, and Spanish. 3. Is Your Child Bilingual? If your child is fluent in a second language, it doesnt make sense for them to pay for a college course in the same language. Taking the CLEP exam is a great opportunity for students to pass out of the subject they already know. 4. Does your child have significant life experience? Some students need to stop attending college for one reason or another but want to go back to school later in life. Adult students who have significant work or military experience may have learned skills that can help them pass one of the CLEP exams. Additionally, some students are very well read and may feel comfortable taking an American literature exam or they may have a knack for college algebra or precalculus, all of which are offered in the series of CLEP exams. 5. How much do the CLEP costs? Each CLEP exam costs $80, according to the College Board. Although this is a significant amount of money for most Americans, it costs a lot less than taking a college level course (READ: Sleep, a Healthy Lifestyle, and Academic Success). 6. How are the CLEP exams scored? The multiple-choice exams are scored by computer and the essays are scored by an English professor chosen by the College Board. The highest score on the CLEP exam is 80 and the lowest is 20. Most students will receive their scores instantly, except for the essays which can take up to a month to be delivered. 7. Which universities accept CLEP exams for credit? Many universities across the US will accept the CLEP exams, however, its important that students speak directly with the universities theyre planning to apply to as theres no hard and fast rule as to whether or not a university will accept these exams. It doesn’t make sense to study for an exam that a student won’t get credit for. In short Although students likely don’t want to add more standardized exams to their schedule, taking a few CLEP exams can certainly make their first two years of college go by faster and might be able to save them a significant amount of money in the long run. What Is Non Volatile Chemistry?

What Is Non Volatile Chemistry? Many people have no idea what non volatile chemistry is, and therefore why you should care. Well, you may not care, but it is important to know that the United States Geological Survey's National Petroleum Laboratory in the Bronx actually has a state of the art laboratory for studying the non volatile reaction rates of a wide variety of gases. They measure these reactions because they determine the potential for an explosion. Think about that.Non volatile chemistry is something that is actually used every day by many different industries. Most people, when asked what they think about all this, have a hard time understanding what is happening, but that is actually part of the beauty of non volatile chemistry. If you have ever worked with a gasoline additive and then poured in a little more of it, it is actually non volatile chemistry. If you have ever tried to blend two liquids or add two chemicals together, it is still non volatile chemistry. It is impor tant to remember that non volatile chemistry is really just another word for thermodynamics. What thermodynamics teaches us is that when we react chemical products, they will leave a residue and a trace. The trace can be anything from a tiny amount to millions of pounds, depending on the properties of the products and the things we are reacting. When scientists study non volatile chemistry, they use this concept of thermodynamics to study how different chemicals react. If you have ever tried to mix the right amount of water and salt into something like soda, you are likely looking at a non volatile reaction. These reactions are very powerful and can be used to create nearly everything in our lives. The trace of water and salt is usually a product of the reaction itself, but there are instances where the level is really just a random occurrence. It does not take a very bright mind to understand this, but if you want to make a simple non volatile chemistry experiment, you can buy a book with step by step instructions and then follow the steps to the letter. In fact, you can even do it using your own two hands. You will likely notice that if you do it correctly, the entire thing is done by trial and error. Sometimes it does not work as well as you would like it to, but that is part of the beauty of science. So, what is non volatile chemistry? It is actually a large branch of chemistry, and one that has many uses in a variety of fields. It includes all sorts of reactions that involve the use of volatile chemicals, and it can make most of them non volatile chemistry, so if you see something that makes you laugh, there you go. It is used in science to create many things from materials that are ordinarily non volatile. The reason for the interest in non volatile chemistry is that there are some products that were originally non volatile and then become so through certain processes. It is the power of the natural world that keep the oil, the coal, and the gas available fo r humans.

While this isn't a free method for learning how to play guitar, it's arguably the most cost-effective.If you live in the country or a small town and can't find the right private tutor to come to your house, you can always consider getting online private tutorials. This is when a tutor teaches their students via webcam with a video conferencing programme such as Skype. Since the tutor doesn't have to travel, they have fewer outgoings and tend to charge less for their tutorials.  Even if there are tutors who live near you, you can always opt for online private tutorials if you're on a really tight budget but desperate to learn how to play guitar. Finally, there are also group tutorials. Since there are multiple students in the class, each stu dent pays a smaller share of the total cost. This means that group tutorials tend to be cheaper than both one-on-one private tutorials and online tutorials. Of course, this also means that you get less individual attention from your tutor as they have the other students in your class to worry about, too. With all that said, the ideal solution for learning the guitar is a combination of all the resources available to you and the ones that help you learn as effectively as possible.

My Experience at Brown University

My Experience at Brown University Kevin earned his bachelors degree in neuroscience in 2016 from Brown University. Subjects he specializes in include English tutoring, writing tutoring, math tutoring, and others. Below he shares his experience at Brown University: Describe the campus setting and transportation options. Kevin: The campus setting is predominantly urban, seeing as there is a lot of paved road. I say predominantly because it also has the feeling of a New England town since there is a lot of foliage and grass all around campus. As for transportation, one could ride a bike, drive a car, or take the campus shuttle. The beauty of the campus is that one could also walk around campus and arrive to class in a timely manner since the buildings are all close to one another. How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants at Brown University? Kevin: Generally, professors and other faculty are available, but because many professors are involved in research of their own, it is necessary to be persistent in contacting them for help or advice. My academic adviser was hard to reach when I needed to finalize the declaration of my major because he not only lectured in multiple classes but he also had research of his own that he did. However, teaching assistants are very available since; being students, they have similar schedules to me! How would you describe the dorm liferooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Kevin: Each dormitory has a specific style depending on when they were built. For example, some dormitories felt more like homes, seeing as they were large houses while other dormitories are newer and contain modern appliances. Even though I lived in spacious rooms during much of my time in college, my dorm during freshman year felt cramped due to the narrow hallways. There were many opportunities to socialize, whether through Unit Wars, a series of games where different dorms compete in fun activities or through baking cookies. There is ample opportunity to socialize. Which majors/programs are best represented and supported? Kevin: My university supports most science majors like biology, physics, environmental science, and chemistry, as well as liberal arts majors like English and various foreign languages. Its also interesting to note that a student can create their own major! I studied neuroscience because of my personal interest and also because I was aware of the outstanding neuroscience department at my university. How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Kevin: I did not participate in Greek life during my time as an undergraduate student but this did not hinder me from making friends as a freshman. It was easy to meet others since during the first few weeks of orientation, there are various mixers that allow students to meet their peers in a more informal setting. How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services at Brown University? Kevin: The Career Center, also known as CareerLAB at my school, is helpful in teaching basic skills like how to craft a resume, answer interview questions, apply to graduate school, and plan a career path. It also helps by exposing students to outside companies and organizations like Capital One bank, the United States Armed Forces, and local hospitals. How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Kevin: There are three main libraries on campus that can be crowded, especially during finals week. Most dorms have lounges which vary in size but they are generally comfortable for studying. Describe the surrounding town. Kevin: Downtown from campus, there is a nearby mall with shops and a food court. There are also other places to visit like the various restaurants that serve cuisine from different cultures and the art festivals that frequently occur. How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Kevin: The student body consists of over 6,000 undergraduates, with an average class size of 30 people in a classroom and about 200 people in a lecture. I am content with the class sizes, even if I prefer smaller class sizes. Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Kevin: My most memorable experience was after taking a medical seminar, the professor, who is also my advisor, encouraged me by noting that she saw my drive to become a doctor. Given that I would eventually be returning to go to medical school, she couldnt wait to see the progress I would achieve based on how I performed in her class. Check out Kevins tutoring profile. Upcoming Changes in the SAT

Upcoming Changes in the SAT Note: A more updated account of the SAT changes can be found here. You may have your grievances with the SAT, just as university professors may have theirs. Nearly everyone has a suggestion or two for the College Board when it comes to their infamous test. The College Board evidently listened to someone (perhaps even you), as they have recently announced several major revisions to the SAT that should take effect in 2016. It should be noted that the current SAT format will not change. There will still be Writing, Mathematics, and Critical Reading sections. However, the College Board hopes to make the test content more relevant to the material that students learn in their high school classes and closer to the material that theyll need to understand in order to do well in college. Thus, the College Board also intends to make the test more practical. [RELATED: What is an Average SAT Score?] There are some very specific modifications that could affect your SAT preparation but first, its critical to understand the rationale behind these changes. The SAT is designed to be the great equalizer in college admissions and to accurately predict students success in higher education. However, the College Board President, David Coleman, recently acknowledged that the SAT isnt doing the best it can to achieve these goals. Some experts say that high school grades are still a better predictor of future academic success than SAT scores. The proposed changes to the SAT are intended to bridge this gap and make SAT scores a more accurate measure of how well students will perform at the college level. Critical Reading Perhaps one of the largest problems with the current version of the SAT is the seemingly arbitrary vocabulary words that are used on the test. The College Board has heard this feedback, so students might not have to memorize these arcane terms anymore. According to the proposed changes, these words will be replaced with vocabulary that youd be far more likely to actually use in college and in everyday life. If you plan to take the test in 2016, ensure you locate and understand this new set of vocabulary words. [RELATED: What Does SAT Stand For?] Mathematics The SAT Mathematics changes are not as significant as the Critical Reading modifications. However, the College Board is attempting to recognize and pinpoint the equations and types of thinking that truly matter in college courses. Coleman specifically mentioned that proportional reasoning, linear equations, and linear functions are some of the question types that determine if students can succeed at the college level. Coleman also noted that pupils should be able to do more than just pick the correct answer. He suggested that they should be able to explain their mathematical reasoning as well. This strongly indicates that future SAT tests may have more of these question types and less of the multiple-choice format. Writing In addition to multiple-choice questions devoted to mechanics, the infamous essay is also found in this section. It is the essay that may undergo the largest revision on the new SAT. Right now, its designed to measure how well you can articulate an argument and string together cohesive thoughts but it doesnt take off many points for inaccurate statements staging as facts. So, it essentially allows students to fabricate facts to better support an argument. Coleman is planning to change this and to require students to solely use factual evidence to support arguments in their essays. [RELATED: How is the New SAT Scored?]

The History of A Cappella

The History of A Cappella The History of Singing without Music ChaptersA Cappella Singing: Religious OriginsA Cappella and Its Influence through HistoryA Cappella Music TodayThe Most Famous A Cappella GroupsOf all the different types of music, a cappella is pretty special. This is music in which there’s no instrumental accompaniment. In this case, only the voice matters and all melodies need to be created vocally.A cappella groups date back centuries and they’ve been able to create polyphonic music through choral singers and choirs and even create rhythms and beats without a need for musical instruments. The ancient techniques have been around for millennia and they’re still used nowadays. In this article, we’re looking at the history of a cappella singing, its roots to the modern age, and the most popular a cappella groups around now. The first records of human beings singing appear in carved texts. One of the first examples is featured on a Cuneiform tablet dating back to 2,000BCE. A cappella started in churches and monasteries. (Source: ddzphoto)However, a cappella as it’s known today dates back to religious singing. Etymologically speaking, alla cappella means “in the style of the chapel” and this singing was usually done in churches. At the time, it was accompanied by instruments like the organ. However, during the first millennium of Christianity, there weren’t any instruments. This was the same for Byzantine Orthodox rites in which the singing was never accompanied by music. Similarly, Gregorian chants were some of the first a cappella music.A lot of religious communities then decided that the hymns needed to be a cappella. The Amish, Mennonites, and other Anabaptist groups decided against the use of instruments. Jewish communities, on the other hand, didn’t ban the use of instruments except on the Sabbath. The tradition of a cappella singing originated in Europe and around the Baltic Sea, in particular, but it quickly spread across the continent a nd into the New World and peaked in the United States during the 19th century when it started influencing other styles of music.A Cappella and Its Influence through HistoryDuring the Medieval period, churches regularly performed Gregorian chants. Thanks to films and series, a cappella has never been so popular. (Source: Didgeman)It was during the 15th century that a cappella became popular in European churches and several people would sing at once. In the 16th century, a cappella music was slowly replaced by cantata, which had musical accompaniment.Famous composers included Josquin des Prez and Orlando di Lasso who created polyphonic a cappella music. The madrigal then became popular; a type of music where between 2 and 8 people sing without instrumental accompaniment. Claudio Monteverdi is a fine example of the Madrigal.  Madrigals accompanied a cappella music from the Renaissance to the Baroque period and both changed over time.In the 19th century, choirboys became popular in churches. They’d sing in the parish under the supervision of the clergy.A cappella music evolved a lot in the United States. Thanks to Peter Christian Lutkin, the dean of the Conservatory of Music at Northwestern University, founded the Northwestern A Cappella Choir in 1906.Numerous choral groups started popping up all over American universities and were often linked to the accompanying school. St. Olaf College, which has had an a cappella group since 1911, Concordia College, Augustana College, and Luther College all have a history of a cappella groups. While collegiate a cappella groups are now quite common in the United States but that doesn't mean you can't sing a cappella here in the UK.From a cappella, a new type of singing was born in the 1930s; Barbershop. This is a type of close-harmony singing with 4 voices and no instrumental accompaniment. This type of singing was inspired by the practices of barbers in the southern United States who’d sing to entice clients into their barbershops. Most barbershop quartets have the following 4 voices:A first tenorA second tenorA baritoneA bassAfter Barbershop, Doo-wop was created in the United States.
